Ways of the Bison

‘Ways of the Bison’ is an inter-disciplinary curriculum-connected education program that teaches about the cultural and ecological significance of Bison.

The culminating field day for Grade 4 students brings Îyarhe Nakoda Elders and students together with non-Indigenous students for a day of learning with the land at Star 6 Ranch. Watch the video below to view a highlight video from the 2024 program!

By following the 'Ways of the Bison', we discover we are stronger together.

Through a series of classroom sessions and field experiences, students will explore Bison artefacts and learn the ‘Ways of the Bison’ from non-Indigenous and Indigenous perspectives.

We are in the process of expanding this interdisciplinary program from the current Grade 4 focus to create Alberta curriculum-linked lesson plans for K-6 Science and Social Studies a Grade 9 science. For the 2024-25 school year, we look forward to distributing free access to the lesson plans below and supporting your class’ learning. You can expect to be supported in the classroom learning about Bison from an educator who is teaching through a series of games, activities and stories. We also look forward to again hosting a field day at Star 6 Ranch that brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous students for a day of learning alongside one another and with the land.

In 2023 and 2024, we partnered with Stoney Education Authority, FrancoSud and Canadian Rockies Public Schools to offer a unique field day for students from non-Indigenous and Indigenous communities to meet one another for a fun day at Star 6 Ranch.

Students shared games, learned from the Îyarhe Nakoda Elders, sampled bison stew and discovered that we are stronger together. Watch the video above for a 2024 program highlight and 2023 program report from 2023 below.
