Have you ever wondered where your energy comes from or where your water goes? In this experiential course, Grade 10-12 students will learn through site visits, hiking tours and guest speakers about everything that connects them to the environment. The 3-credit course is part of the Career and Technology Studies area of the Alberta curriculum. Students will learn about topics from human-wildlife coexistence, vegetation identification and waste water treatment to energy production, Îyethka traditional knowledge, Indigenous practices to care for the land and the Nakoda language.
Future Leaders is here to co-deliver this exceptional course with your school staff in the Bow Valley. We also welcome you to explore the Activity Guide below. We are in the process of updating the course but the listed activities outlined in the links below will give you a good starting reference as to how to build your version of the course.
In 2023-24, Future Leaders piloted an Environmental Stewardship course at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy in Canmore, Alberta. The photos above highlight some of the course learning connected to the community. From learning about local bird species to touring the TransAlta Hyrdoplant (Spray) to the Epcor Wastewater Treatment Facility and learning from Îyethka Elder Phillomene Stephens, the students were immersed in valuable experiential learning.
